Awakened

    Zoey has returned from the Otherworld to her family and friends on Sgiach, the Island of Skye. She reaffirms her connection with her warrior Stark and Zoey discovers she can call on the ancient fey to support her elemental magic. Aphrodite, Damien, and the twins return home to Stevie Rae who is back in Tulsa with the red fledglings 

     Neferet kills Jack--Damien's boyfriend and a member of the nerd-herd--as a tribute to the Darkness. The loss of their friend draws Zoey and Stark back to their responsibilities. Kalona finds that he has a connection to Stark after breathing some of his immortality into the dying warrior. 

     Neferet uses Jack's funeral as a public display to try regaining the House of Night's trust. Zoey sees through the fake apology but in the same spectacle to order the Sons of Erebus to murder Rephaim and Stevie Rae for their association with Darkness. 

     Stevie Rae asks the nerd herd to protect Rephaim - who has only defended himself rather than actively fighting for his freedom. She asks Kalona to release Rephaim and he grants his son's freedom in a direct contradiction of his oath to Neferet. Not all of the members of the House of Night accept that Rephaim has chosen the path of Light. 

     Their goddess, Nyx, appears and forgives the Raven Mocker. She details her wish for the vampyres to move forward in life - singling out Damien and Dragon after the deaths of Jack and Anastasia. Dragon holds on to his anger and, with Neferet, drives Rephaim from the Tulsa House of Night. 

     To be with their friends Zoey creates her own House of Night in the tunnels beneath the city. Zoey is their leader and Vampyre Queen; Stevie Rae is their High Priestess; Kramisha their poet Laureate; and Aphrodite the Prophetess. The red fledglings and nerd herd are their students trying to maintain Nyx's teachings. 

     Neferet continues her quest for power by striking at those close to Zoey Redbird in her human life. Kalona experiments with the piece of his soul in Stark. Zoey and her friends struggle in the changing world and with the blows to their cause. The Vampyre High Council has cleared Neferet of wrongdoing and Zoey has lost significant supports in her system. Neferet's plan for revenge appears to be on a strong course. 

     Zoey has a more adult take on the events in her life--including a mature relationship with her warrior-protector. Older teen readers who enjoyed the first seven episodes in the House of Night series will enjoy the eighth installment of Zoey Redbird's story. 

Burned

   After Zoey battles Neferet and her soul shatters, Stark takes her to the Isle of Sgiach where his kinsman is the queen's guardian. Following a poem from Kramisha, Darius and Aphrodite team with Sgiach to determine what exactly it will take for Zoey to come back.
     Zoey lingers in the Otherworld mourning the loss of her ex-boyfriend Heath. Stark must become a Shaman to find Zoey, especially when she doesn't want to return. Zoey refuses to accept the portions of her soul back and has been trapped in the Otherworld unable to move either forward or backward.
     To get Stark into the Otherworld, even after he becomes a Shaman, takes a long and involved process of summoning one of the Bulls either of Darkness or Light. Stevie Rae and Rephiam mistake the white bull of Darkness for the harbinger of Light.
     When he is led by the White Bull of Darkness into the Otherworld Stark contacts Heath hoping to convince Zoey to return when Heath has moved beyond the Otherworld. Her fear of losing the people she loves is the impetus which brings Zoey back.
     The world Zoey comes back to has been forever changed by the argument between Light and Darkness. Stevie Rae is in Tulsa holding down the fort, the rest of the crew has traveled to the Isle of Sgiach to be with Zoey, all are still reeling from the confrontation in Venice. The group is picking up the pieces, the world of vampyres is constantly changing: Neferet claims she is the goddess Nyx and Kalona her consort Erebus.
     Though only teenagers Zoey, Stevie Rae and their friends are insistent that they can make a change in the world around them. The vampyres fledglings have always trusted have little to say when things are beyond their expectation. Zoey fights to maintain her faith in the people around her as they face life-changing challenges. Burned focuses more on Zoey's friends and what they'll do to keep her around. Their adventures are aimed at older teens who enjoy contemporary paranormal with a touch of romantic triangle.

Dragon's Oath

Dragon's Oath by Kristin and P.C. Cast, 2011 St. Martin's Press

      When Anastasia, his wife, is killed Dragon Lankford is devastated. In Dragon's Oath readers understand his reaction.
     Dragon stands sentry over Jack's funeral pyre and opens a locket with a lock of Anastasia's hair. The wind picks up the hair and blows it over the pyre, initiating a spell that reveals her last wish: that Dragon temper his blade with mercy.
    The story continues when Dragon is still human, in England he is banished to America after a scandal with the neighbor's daughter. A vampyre labels Dragon Lankford a fledgling and takes him aboard a ship decorated with a dragon, inspiring his new name.
     In America, Anastasia is a spells and rituals professor at the Chicago House of Night speaking to the headmistress; she has been asked by several fledglings for love spells concerning Dragon. When she does a spell to show them his true self, she draws him to her and discovers she loves him.
     The headmistress worries about one of the local officials and his harassment of vampyre students. Anastasia offers to perform a peace spell, and takes Dragon as a Warrior, the opposite of her goal and a piece of the spell. But when they've done the spell the official chokes Dragon, fights and prepares to rape Anastasia before killing her, but Dragon manages to come to the rescue. Anastasia Changes him into a full vampyre and he swears his Warrior's Oath to her.
     The tale returns to present-day Dragon when Nyx and Anastasia appear to him. They try to convince him to move on, but when Nyx will not return Anastasia to him, Dragon renounces her, slowly turning to the dark side of Neferet.
     Dragon's story adds to the full novels through explaining how Dragon came to be who he is. His relationship with Anastasia is one of the strongest motivating factors of his being and her loss rocks him deeply. Dragon's history enriches the world of the House of Night.

Tempted

Tempted by Kristin and P.C. Cast, 2009 St. Martin's Press

     Unlike the other stories, Tempted is told from the point of view of not only Zoey, but Stevie Rae, Stevie Rae, Aphrodite, Rephiam, Heath, and Stark.
     After Kalona rose and helped Neferet attacked Zoey and her friends the two retreated to the House of Night leaving the 'nerd herd' to gather their allies. But Stevie Rae notices that Zoey is becoming exhausted and takes the reigns to allow her time with Stark and her grandmother. Sylvia recovers from her car accident and explains the relationship between Zoey and the reincarnation of Ay-a Kalona searches for. A sliver of Zoey's spirit is Ay-a, and she has the power to re-imprison Kalona. However the part of Zoey that is Ay-a is drawn to him, despite her desire to stay away.
     Kalona, Erik, and Stark all vie for Zoey's attention, but when Erik is overly possessive and jealous she dumps him. Erik turns and starts up a relationship with Venus, Aphrodite's former roommate. Kalona takes the opportunity to sneak into Zoey's unguarded dreams, when Stark senses her panic he climbs up to her room and acts as a shield against Kalona's entry into Zoey's dreams. Aphrodite takes Darius, the group's resident Sons of Erebus Warrior and Aphrodite's love interest, to Stark's empty room where she reveals her feelings and he pledges his Warrior's Oath to her.
     When the group returns to the House of Night they find Anastasia Lankford has been killed by Rephaim, a Raven Mocker. Dragon is devastated, Jack stays to comfort him and help him through the pain. Aphrodite's visions and Kramisha's prophetic poems show the 'nerd herd' Neferet and Kalona planning to return the vampyre world to the old ways. Jack uses social media to find the pair and locate them on the isle of San Clemente with the Vampyre Council. Zoey and her friends go to Italy to have their say at the Council. Zoey has a dream revealing if she is with Kalona the world will end, if she chooses Nyx and rejects him he will "die", but Zoey feels he can still be saved and has a hard time rejecting him completely. Zoey learns she is the only one who can defeat Kalona, but he promises to change if she will have him and shows her his past as Nyx's Warrior.
     At the council Neferet claims to be Nyx incarnate and places Kalona as her consort Erebus. The council names Aphrodite a Prophetess of the goddess, but distrusts Zoey because of her age. After the Council meeting Zoey and Heath talk, then Zoey sends him to find Stark. When Heath finds Neferet and Kalona in secret conversation he is found and uses the imprint with Zoey to call her just as Kalona kills him. Zoey throws Spirit at Kalona. Her action shatters her soul and sends her to the Otherworld.
     Meanwhile Stevie Rae has stayed in Tulsa to watch over the red fledglings and finds Rephaim injured on the Benedictine Abbey grounds. She rescues him and binds his wounds, but when she discovers he is the one who killed Anastasia Lankford, she doesn't know how to deal with it. The rogue red fledglings find Rephaim and use him to capture Stevie Rae and leave her in a cage on the depot roof where she is nearly burned alive. They get free and Rephaim offers Stevie Rae his imortal blood to save her, breaking the imprint between Stevie Rae and Aphrodite.
     The revolving relationships and power structures of the House of Night change how the students grow and develop. Zoey stands her ground and fights for what she believes, despite her friends' disbelief and the discouraging response of those in power. She finds inner strength and the changing world around her only adds to her convictions. Aimed toward middle teens, Zoey's story and that of her friends takes the age-old struggle of the average high schooler and puts it in an epic-quest format.

Hunted

     After Stevie Rae is shot to free Kalona from the earth, Zoey and her friends try to heal their fallen friend. Zoey and Stevie Rae reconcile and Zoey introduces the rest of the "Nerd Herd" to some of the red fledglings. Aphrodite allows Stevie Rae to feed from her, causing an imprint but also bringing Stevie Rae back from the edge.
     Erik, Zoey's ex-boyfriend, follows her back to her room and kisses her in an attempt to rekindle their relationship. But the kiss frightens Zoey, as does his possessiveness, and while they do get back together she is unsure how to deal with him. The newly re-formed Kalona makes his way into Zoey's dreams in an attempt to seduce her back to him, he calls her Ay-a and offers her the world.
     In the world of red fledglings Kramisha's poems are revealed as prophecy and Zoey gives her the title "Poet Laureate" in recognition. One of Kramisha's poems give the friends a clue to defeating Kalona: Neferet and Kalona will be defeated when Night, Humanity, Blood, Spirit and Earth come together. The problem is Zoey doesn't know who will be each of the elements.
     The group relocates its anti-Neferet efforts to the abandoned depot and its underground tunnels where the red fledglings reside. Another of Zoey's ex-boyfriends, Heath, comes to reconcile with her and she leaves the depot to talk to him, much to Erik's displeasure. While they talk a Raven-Mocker attacks Zoey and nearly kills her. To heal herself, she drinks from Heath and they form another imprint, but she isn't completely healed. Kramisha almost loses control when she sees Heath and Zoey realizes that there are severe differences between the normal fledglings and the red fledglings.
     When the Warrior of Erebus Darius tells Zoey she needs to be around more adult vampires she is forced to move back to the House of Night. There she is under Neferet's control and discovers the fledglings have followed Neferet to turn their backs on Nyx. Darius gets in a fight with one of Kalona's Raven-Mockers and is scarred when Kalona intervenes, angering Aphrodite.
     Zoey felt guilty that Stark died in her arms and when she convinces him to turn back to Nyx the red fledgling becomes the second red vampyre. He pledges his Warrior's Oath to Zoey and she accepts. She confides in the horse mistress, Lenobia, allowing her to focus on Kramisha's prophecy. She realizes that the elements are embodied in Zoey herself, Stevie Rae, Aphrodite, Sister Mary Angela from the Benedictine Abbey, and Zoey's Grandma Redbird.
     The friends rush the Abbey to create their circle and banish Neferet and Kalona. Zoey realizes that Ay-a is a part of her, but not the part that will determine what she does, she rejects Kalona and Neferet orders Stark to kill her. Stark uses his strange affinity for archery to shoot the arrow at himself, but before it can kill him Zoey knocks him out and knocks the arrow aside with the elements. Zoey and her companions manage to complete the circle and banish Neferet and Kalona, but they know it is not the end of the battle.
     Nyx shows her pleasure in Zoey's actions when she expands Zoey's Mark to cover her scars. The friends regroup to plan their next steps.
      In Hunted Zoey deals with the temptations of giving in to peer pressure and the sexual pressure of several men in her life. She must accept that there is a part of her that desires what Kalona can give her, but also she realizes that part is not strong enough to overrule her own personal wants and desires. She realizes she can choose to be who she wants and her choice to give over her life to Nyx is Zoey's way of reclaiming her future. Hunted is targeted at older readers: high school aged or older, with violence and complicated romantic entanglements.

Untamed

Untamed by Kristin and P.C. Cast, 2008 St. Martin's

     Fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird's friends have lost all faith in her, but she has determined to talk to them, to renew and strengthen their relationship. Aphrodite reappears re-Marked and joins the friends at lunch, but before a confrontation can ensue the famous archer fledgling  James Stark arrives. Zoey meets Aphrodite and Stevie Rae after lunch and learns that Stevie Rae is much as she was before her death; the only difference is an aversion to sunlight. The two also reveal that Aphrodite's mark is fake, she is human but retains her visions.
     When she goes to speak with them, Erin, Shaunee, Damien, and Damien's boyfriend (and a new member of their group) Jack, tell Zoey they felt betrayed when she shared Stevie Rae with Aphrodite rather than her friends. When she explains they make up and cast a circle to find out why everything has happened. Nyx explains Stevie Rae and Aphrodite, then warns the group that Dark events have been set in motion.
     The friends, the "nerd herd" rushes to a Council meeting where they find Shekinah, the High Priestess of all vampyres, has arrived to revoke Neferet's declaration of war on humans. Erik has returned to take over Professor Nolan's position as drama teacher, to Zoey's dismay. On her return to the dorm, Zoey sees Stark practicing with his bow and learns his gift is that he never misses a target, but his body rejects the Change and he dies in her arms.
     Zoey and her friends visit a local cat shelter, run by the nuns of the Benedictine Abbey, as a community activity for the Dark Sons and Daughters. The leader, Sister Mary Angela, startles Zoey with the difference between her beliefs and those of her stepfather. On the way back to the House of Night they encounter Heath, Zoey's ex-boyfriend, he says he's given up loving her because it hurt too much. Back at the House of Night Zoey is late for drama with Professor Erik Night, her former boyfriend. He casts her as Desdemona to his Othello, giving her a chance to explain her feelings, but storms off as the bell rings.
     After class Zoey is met by Darius, a Sons of Erebus (Nyx's consort) Warrior, and taken to Aphrodite. She has been having visions of Sylvia Redbird, Zoey's grandmother, and gives Zoey a poem. Sylvia and Zoey work out that the poem is an ancient Cherokee prophecy predicting the rise of Kalona, a fallen angel. Sylvia warns Zoey and her friends of Raven Mockers: half-human, half-raven offspring of Kalona and human women he violated, and Zoey requests that she come to the House of Night for protection.
     On her way to a Council meeting Zoey is attacked by a Raven Mocker and escapes Aphrodite's vision of her death by calling Damien who sends Air to her rescue. She overhears a conversation between Shekinah and Neferet; Neferet blames all the troubles she's faced on Zoey. After Neferet has gone, Zoey explains about the cat shelter and asks for a place for her grandmother. She then finds Erik and explains the situation  he encountered that caused him to break up with her.
     Sylvia Redbird arrives and stays in Stevie Rae and Zoey's room, they discuss what to do about the evil that is coming, but halfway through discover a Raven Mocker listening at the window. Shekinah asks Zoey to perform a cleansing ritual, and comes to tell her Sylvia has been in a car crash. Zoey and friends rush to the hospital and fearing the Raven Mockers caused Sylvia's accident ask to have Sister Mary Angela guard her.
     Zoey performs the ritual and tries to introduce the red fledglings, but Neferet brings undead Stark and tries to frame Zoey. Stark shoots Stevie Rae, nearly killing her, and her blood brings to life Kalona. Neferet kills Shekinah and the 'nerd herd' escapes to the underground tunnels where the red fledglings stayed. The dangerous headmistress is revealed as the evil witch who brings Kalona back from his imprisonment in the earth, heralding a new era at the Tulsa House of Night.
     The friends have found each other again, but have lost their safe haven with their escape from Neferet's dark handhold over the school. Stevie Rae's rediscovery of humanity and near death take their toll on Zoey's growing leadership; she begins to question who she has become, but turns to Nyx and her loving guidance. Zoey is still trying to figure out where her life is going and how to deal with the gifts she has been blessed with. The challenge Neferet poses is devastating, yet she is a believable character as she struggles with the problems rising from Shekinah's death and her friends' banishment. Like the rest of the series, Untamed is directed toward older school-aged readers.

Chosen

Chosen by Kristin and P.C. Cast, 2008 St. Martin's

     On her seventeenth birthday, Zoey Redbird resolves to break up with Heath, but after the crucifixion of Patricia Nolan, one of the House of Night professors, Neferet has tightened security. It appears the People of the Faith have killed Professor Nolan and all vampyres are in danger. She sneaks out to end the relationship with Heath, and fails, but on the way back Zoey and Aphrodite help Stevie Rae into Aphrodite's parents' house where she can stay until they figure out a way to save her.
     Back at House of Night, Zoey must replace Stevie Rae in the Dark Sons and Daughters, she unhappily chooses Aphrodite for her new affinity with Earth. She makes plans to cast a circle to heal Stevie Rae, but her love life complicates everything.
     Zoey's relationship with Erik becomes strained because of the lies she tells to hide Loren Blake's seduction, and her imprint with Heath. The night of Zoey's first Dark Daughters and Sons ceremony with Aphrodite in Stevie Rae's place Erik makes the Change into full vampyre and Loren consummates his relationship with Zoey, breaking the imprint with Heath. Erik walks in on Loren and Zoey and breaks up with her. Then, on her way to meet with Shaunee, Erin, Damien and Aphrodite for the ceremony to heal Stevie Rae, Zoey sees Loren talking to Neferet explaining he had seduced Zoey to distance her from her friends. He professes his love for Neferet, Zoey is startled and shocked.
     Zoey is late for meeting and Stevie Rae arrives before she can explain why they're meeting. Erin, Shaunee, and Damien feel betrayed, but agree to cast the circle and help Stevie Rae. During the casting Stevie Rae becomes jealous of Aphrodite's new place and attacks her. The two imprint and Stevie Rae becomes the first full red vampyre. Aphrodite discovers her Mark is gone: she is human again! Aphrodite and Stevie Rae leave the House of Night through a secret entrance.
     Zoey tries to explain to Erin, Shaunee, and Damien, finally getting them to listen until Erik appears and reveals her infidelity and relationship with Loren Blake. Her friends no longer believe her and Zoey is left alone when spasms of pain signal the end of her imprint with Loren as he died. Neferet uses his death as an excuse to declare war on the humans, Zoey sees that she has gone crazy and confronts Neferet in front of the Council.
     Readers follow Zoey through the difficult and troubling times that she faces as a vampyre fledgling. Her troubles are similar to those of everyday high schoolers: balancing romantic and platonic relationships, losing and creating friendships, and feeling alienated. This third novel goes further into Zoey's development and self-realization, going further into her character and what makes her Zoey Redbird.

Betrayed

Betrayed by Kristin and P.C. Cast, 2007 St. Martin's

     In the second House of Night novel, Zoey is happy at the House of Night, but things start to change. At the first family visitation her parents come and she is excited to see her grandmother, but her parents are stiff and angry with her Change. Zoey's stepfather immediately begins an argument with Neferet and Neferet kicks them off school grounds. They vow never to return and Zoey sees such a difference in the parents' reactions to their fledgling vampyre children: her own parents' disgust, Stevie Rae's mother's undying love, Aphrodite's parents' verbal abuse each family dealt with their child's Change differently.
     Returning to her dorm, Zoey witnesses Neferet scolding Aphrodite about her visions. Neferet invites Zoey to a private dinner where she explains Nyx has withdrawn the gift of visions from Aprhodite and she is no longer to be trusted. When Zoey comes across her later, Aphrodite is crying, claiming to have had a vision of Zoey's grandmother on a bridge as it collapses at a particular time. Unwilling to risk Sylvia's life, Zoey and her friends call in a bomb threat on the bridge, keeping people away from it. When the bridge collapses as Aphrodite's visions predicted Zoey begins to doubt Neferet.
     When two young men she knew before being Marked are found murdered, Zoey begins to worry that something or someone is harming the people in her life. She has a dream of Neferet talking to supposedly dead fledglings about the murders and begins to suspect her. All the while Zoey is trying to balance her love life between the imprint with Heath and the attraction to dramatic Erik Night, but she catches the eye of resident Poet Laureate Loren Blake.
     In her role as High Priestess of the Dark Sons and Daughters, Zoey reorganizes the system, but Neferet takes credit for her ideas and changes. Zoey is confused, her instincts and the awakening voice of Nyx in her head warn her not to trust Neferet, but Zoey is distracted from the problem of Aphrodite and Neferet when Stevie Rae's body rejects the change and she dies. Zoey is wracked with grief, but learns that Heath has disappeared too.
     She uses the imprint to find Heath; he has been held captive by undead "red" fledglings, named for their red marks rather than the grey-blue of normal vampyres'. Zoey rescues Heath with her elemental affinities, but finds Stevie Rae among the undead fledglings. Neferet has taken the dying fledglings and returned them to life somehow, but what does she have in mind for these creatures who have lost their humanity? When she arrives back at the House of Night Neferet tries to erase the memories of the red fledglings, but Nyx returns the memories and Zoey tries to develop a plan to help Stevie Rae.
     Betrayed develops the conflict between Neferet and Zoey, fledging out the meaning of Nyx's reminder: "Dark does not always equate evil, Light does not always bring good". The language and some mature content suggest an older readership--ninth grade or older.

Marked

     Zoey is just like any other sixteen-year-old high schooler; living in a suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and dating her lifelong love the star of the football team, Heath. Life seems perfect. Until one day she begins to feel sick and passes out in the empty halls after school. A strange figure in the darkening world points at her, and when Zoey wakes up she has been Marked with the unfilled crescent moon of a vampyre fledgling.
     When Zoey goes home she is immediately blamed for her Change by her uber-religious parents and escapes to her grandmother's home rather than be taken to the anti-vampyre Elders of the People of Faith and whatever penance they may inflict. At her grandmother, Sylvia Redbird's lavender farm Zoey again passes out, but has a dream from the vampyre goddess Nyx giving her a particular mission. She encourages Zoey to remember that "Darkness does not always equate evil, Light does not always bring good."
     She awakens at the Tulsa House of Night, a boarding school where fledgling vampyres are mentored and surrounded by adult vampyres to help their bodies accept the Change. Zoey discovers that her mark has been filled in, unusual for a fledgling, and that she may change her name: she chooses her Cherokee Grandmother's maiden name becoming Zoey Redbird.
     Another fledgling, Aphrodite, takes Zoey to her room where she meets her new roommate and future best friend, Stevie Rae. She makes friends with Shaunee,  Erin, and Damien, friends of Stevie Rae's, and discovers Aphrodite has the power to see the future and is the High Priestess of the Dark Sons and Daughters, not to mention a stuck-up brat.
     Aphrodite and Zoey's new friends seem to be on opposite ends of a sort of feud, the elitist Dark Sons and Daughters on one end bullying the rest of the student population on the other. When Zoey is invited to join the group her friends encourage her to accept for insider information on the group. She does accept, but at the first ceremony Aphrodite gives Zoey fledgling blood in their wine, inciting a hunger strange for how powerful it is in such a young fledgling. Zoey flees, but finds her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend trying to break her out. She loses control and bites Heath, creating an Imprint and scaring Kayla away. When Heath finally does leave Erik Night, a fifth-former and one of the most popular guys at the House of Night, comforts Zoey and walks her back to her dorm.
     The next morning the headmistress, Neferet, explains an Imprint and moves Zoey into an upper-level sociology class, marveling at how powerful she is. Zoey is chosen by a cat, who she names Nala, and discovers she has affinities for each of the five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Spirit--the first of any vampyre in history.  Her friends each have an affinity for one of the elements, too. At the Samhain celebration Zoey is invited back into the Dark Sons and Daughters and all goes according to plan, until Heath appears trying to take Zoey back. Aphrodite summons dark spirits who try to feast on his fresh blood, but Zoey, Stevie Rae, Erin, Shaunee, and Damien use their new-found abilities to save him.
     Neferet witnesses the entire debacle and transfers leadership of the Dark Sons and Daughters from Aphrodite to Zoey. Aphrodite is not pleased and threatens Zoey that it is not over. All appears to be going well and the new friends go about their lives without giving her claim much thought.
     Marked is the first in the House of Night Series and the first book co-written by the mother-daughter team: P.C. and Kristin Cast. It is written for a high-school audience, with some sexuality and language. The beginning of Zoey's journey is followed with the second novel: Betrayed.
